Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Free floating perennial herbs, stoloniferous.

Stems: Vegetative stems condensed, except when branching.

Roots: Fibrous root system.

Leaves: Leaves simple. In a basal rosette. Blades ovate to orbicular, usually 3.5–16 cm long, 4–14 cm wide. Blades leathery. Margins entire. Veins acrodromous. Petioles usually 7–30 cm long, inflated near base, sheathing and tubular. Stipules 2.5–14 cm.

Flowers: Flowers numerous on scapes 1–4 dm long, with a conspicuous sheath near middle; terminal. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Perianth in two series violet, the tube curved, 1.5–2 cm long, the lobes obovate to elliptic, 3.54 cm long, upper lobe enlarged and with a patch of blue with a yellow center. Stamens 6 (3 long & 3 short). Ovary superior, 3-celled; ovules numerous.

Fruit: Capsules. Seeds longitudinally ribbed.

100 Pontederia crassipes Bishop Museum Grounds, Courtyard between Konia Hall and Paki Hall. Growing inside of the Stone Bowl from Kapahi, Kapa`a Homestead, Kauai. In fetid water with duckweeds at the surface and Amphipods among the roots. Water reservoir < 0.3 m across (depth unchecked). Area planted with a mix of Polynesian and Non-native plants; Musa sp., Alpinia sp. (variegated leaf cultivar), Microsorum grossum, Spathodea campanulata seedling, and recently planted Piper methysticum. Strong afternoon sun, but shaded morning and afternoon (the area is mostly enclosed by walls). Preserved_Specimen Ornamental. Height of vegetative parts ~ 30 cm; flower ~42 cm. Bright lime green waxy leaves and stems. Petioles swollen corky bulb-like floats. Roots are a fibrous, black, tangled mass.
