Growth Form: Erect annual or short-lived perennial herbs, usually subglabrous.

Stems:

Roots: Taprooted.

Leaves: Leaves compound (palmate or pinnately trifoliate). Alternate. Leaflets usually oblanceolate to obovate. Margins serrate in upper part. Petiolate. Stipules lanceolate to subulate, partially adnate to petioles.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary, spike-like racemes. Flowers papilionaceous; bracteoles absent. Calyx campanulate, 5-toothed, the teeth subequal. Corolla yellow or white, sometimes tinged blue or violet, deciduous. Stamens 10; upper staminal filament distinct, the other 9 connate into a tube. Ovary superior; ovules few; style 1, apical.

Fruit: Pods straight; subglobose to obovoid; usually indehiscent. Seeds 1–2(–4).
