Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Subshrubs 6–20 dm tall.

Stems: Stems rather rigid, erect to sometimes decumbent, velvety tomentose throughout, the hairs stellate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades broadly ovate to oblong–ovate, 2–15.5 cm long, 1–6 cm wide. Apex rounded, sometimes obtuse. Base rounded to subcordate. Surfaces tomentose with stellate hairs, blades rugose; lower surfaces paler. Margins serrate or serrate–dentate. Petioles 0.5–4.5 cm long. Stipules small, linear to narrowly lanceolate.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary, sessile or pedunculate glomerules, bracts linear, +/- with an involucel subtending the calyx, the bracts distinct or basally connate. Flowers small, fragrant, bisexual (perfect). Calyx composed of connate sepals, strongly ribbed, ca. 3–5 mm long, villous, narrowly campanulate, 5-lobed, the lobes valvate in bud. Corolla actinomorphic to moderately zygomorphic, tubular to rotate or reflexed. corolla of 5 petals, yellow, spatulate, 4–6 mm long, persistent, distinct, convolute. Stamens 5, opposite the petals, connate at base, staminodes absent; anthers dithecal. Pollen globose, echinate. Ovary superior, 1-carpellate, 1-celled, placentation axile; ovules 2, ascending to pendulous; style slightly excentric, clavate, bearded, exceeding the staminal column; stigmas terminal or decurrent.

Fruit: Capsules 2-valved; loculicidally dehiscent; obliquely globose; 2.5–3 mm long. Seeds 1 per fruit; oblong to subglobose; not winged; with or without endosperm.

Ploidy: 2n = 14; 26; 40

Habitat: Occurring in dry often disturbed sites.

Elevation Range: 0–1,220 m.

Uses and Culture

USES

  • The flowers of the ‘uhaloa are considered "good medicine for children" (more than 10 days old). In treating kunu kohekohe o ka pu‘u and ‘eha o ka umauma ke hanu a‘e the tap root is chewed and the liquid is swallowed and the sediment is discarded. To treat kohepopo, the leaf buds, lower leaves, flowers, and tap root bark are pounded and mixed with ‘ala‘alawainui pehu (Peperomia spp.), kī flowers (ti, Cordyline fruticosa), kohekohe (Eleocharis spp.), hala aerial roots (Pandanus tectorius), niu flesh (coconut, Cocos nucifera), ripe noni fruits (Morinda citrifolia), and kōkea (white sugarcane, Saccharum officinarum). The mixture is strained, and the jiuce of a he‘i (papaya, Carica papaya) is added and the liquid is cooked, and when cool, drunk. In addition, the patient eats slightly sour poi, fish, lu‘au, kukui (Aleurites moluccana), and pōpolo (Solanum americanum). Tea of ko‘oko‘olau leaves (Bidens spp.) is drunk; koali ‘apu is the purgative. For hopilo nae ("run down, lost weight, asthma"), the leaf buds, leaves, flowers, tap roots of the ‘uhaloa are pounded and blended with the tap root bark, flowers, leaf buds, and lower leaves of the pōpolo, a ripe niu, noni fruits, and kōkea. The liquid is strained out and cooked, after it has cooled it is drunk. The patient is fed mai‘a iholena and niu water. Ko‘oko‘olau tea accompanies the treatment and koali ‘apu is the purgative (Chun 1994:244–247).

CULTURE

  • Aia i kula i ka ‘ala‘alapuloa. Gone to the plain to gather ‘ala‘alapuloa. Gone on a wild goose chase. A play on ‘ala‘ala (octopus liver) meaning nothing worthwhile. ‘Ala‘alapuloa is another name for ‘uhaloa.

PROPAGATION/CULTIVATION

  • The fruit of Waltheria indica is a small, round, dry capsule containing one seed.
  • Waltheria indica can be grown from seed. Collect the tiny capsules when they are mature, but before they have turned completely brown. Dry them in a paper container for about a week and sift the resulting material though a strainer to separate the seeds.
  • NTBG suggests sowing the seeds on the surface of a planting mix consisting of 2 parts sterile potting soil to 1 part perlite or fine cinder. Stratton's informants suggest planting the seeds 1/8 inch deep in a mixture of 3 parts #2 perlite to 1 part Sunshine Mix #4. Keep the mix damp until germination, but avoid excessive moisture. Place the containers in a shaded area. Using a covered area will allow better control of soil moisture and prevent rain damage. Germination takes 1 to 3 months.
  • To store the seed of Waltheria indica, clean and air dry it and place it in a paper bag or envelope.
