Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Vines.

Stems: Stems twining, herbaceous, up to 4 m or more long, usually reddish hirsute with long, erect to suberect hairs.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves compound (palmate). Alternate. Leaflets 5, elliptic. Apex acuminate to acute. Base acuminate to acute. Surfaces sparsely pubescent to glabrate. Margins entire to dentate. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in cymes, usually on long peduncles, pedicels 1–2 cm long, bracts scale-like. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, 5-merous. Calyx of 5 sepals, distinct, imbricate, subequal, oblong, ca. 2 cm long, hirsute with yellowish erect hairs, apex acute; persistent, occasionally accrescent. Corolla of 5 fused petals; petals white, campanulate, 2–3 cm long, glabrous. Stamens 5, distinct; filaments equal or subequal, inserted on corolla tube base alternate with corolla lobes, usually glabrous at base; anthers spirally twisted; anthers dithecal, usually linear or oblong, extrorse, with complete dehiscence. Ovary superior, 2–3-carpellate, usually glabrous, placentation basal or basal-axile; ovules 4–6; style 1, filiform, simple or bifid; stigma simple, globose or 2-lobed, the lobes globose, included.

Fruit: Capsules tan to pale brown; subglobose; 2–4–celled; 1–2 cm in diameter; subtended and partially surrounded by the somewhat enlarged calyx; longitudinally dehiscent by 4–6 valves; pericarp thin and fragile. Seeds often 4; usually tan; glabrous; endosperm absent or scanty; cartilaginous; cotyledons usually foliaceous.

Ploidy: 2n = 28; 30

Habitat: Common in dry; disturbed sites.

Elevation Range: 0–100(–350) m.
