Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 12–22 m tall.

Stems: Bark gray to grayish brown, fibrous, flaky, tessellate throughout.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, 12–20 cm long, 1.5–2.5 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades concolorous. Margins crenulate. Petioles 15–30 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles terete (cylindrical), 7–15 mm long, pedicels 2–5 mm long. buds ovoid, often apiculate, 5–7 mm long, 3–5 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit hemispherical; 5–7 mm long; 4–7 mm wide; valves 3–4; exserted. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Planted extensively on Kauaʻi; Oʻahu; Molokaʻi; and Hawaiʻi; and regenerating by seed at least within the plantations.
