Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Fleshy herbs.

Stems: Stems usually several, reddish purple, sometimes green with a reddish tinge, ascending to erect from a long repent base, 5–20(–25) cm long, 1.5–3 mm in diameter toward base, usually dichotomously or trichotomously many-branched, internodes 0.3–2.5(–3) cm long, sometimes the lowermost up to 6 cm long, moderately to densely hirsute or sometimes hirtellous, the hairs spreading or sometimes somewhat appressed, 0.6–0.8(–1) mm long.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Whorled (2)3–6 per node. Blades elliptic, broadly elliptic to obovate or broadly obovate, sometimes some of them suborbicular or ovate, 0.5–2(–2.5) cm long, 0.2–1.1(–1.3) cm wide. Apex acute, obtuse, or rounded. Base cuneate, sometimes broadly so. Upper surfaces usually with principal veins somewhat impressed, sparsely to moderately appressed hirtellous, sometimes only toward margins or base; lower surfaces moderately or sometimes sparsely appressed hirtellous; upper surfaces dark green; lower surfaces pale green with reddish purple intercostal areas, thinly fleshy, drying somewhat coriaceous or chartaceous. Margins entire, ± somewhat revolute, at least when dry. Palmately 3-veined or pinnately 5-veined, sometimes only midrib visible when dry. Petioles 0.2–1 cm long, hirtellous. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in fleshy spikes usually several, terminal or axillary, 0.5–2(–2.5) cm long, the rachis ca. 0.6–1.1 mm in diameter, glabrous, flowers moderately congested, peduncles 0.5–1(–1.2) cm long, sparsely to moderately appressed or spreading hirtellous, occasionally only with a few scattered hairs. Flowers bisexual (perfect), perianth absent. Each flower subtended by a peltate bract. Calyx (sepals) absent. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 2. Ovary superior, ovoid–turbinate to obovoid–turbinate, 1-carpellate, 1-celled; ovules 1 per cell, orthotropous, erect; stigmas terminal or slightly subterminal.

Fruit: Fruit ovoid to obovoid; ca. 1 mm long; papillose–viscid with sessile glands. Seeds 1 per fruit; with scanty endosperm and copious; starchy perisperm.

Ploidy: 2n = ca. 36; 44

Habitat: Wet forests.

Elevation Range: 840–1,690 m.
