Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Probably small trees up to 5 m tall, bark glabrous, brightly ashy–brown.

Stems: Flowering stems 6–7 mm in diameter, densely tomentose.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades ovate to ovate–elliptic, ovate–oblong, or oblong, 6–23 cm long, 3.5–7.5 cm wide; at least some of the leaves peltate or hemipeltate (base of Blades inequilateral with long side distinct from midrib at base), some to many leaves basifixed. Apex obtuse to rounded, occasionally emarginate. Base broadly rounded or truncate, ± inequilateral. Upper surfaces puberulent along midrib; lower surfaces densely tomentose on the veins, the hairs yellowish; blades coriaceous. Margins entire or slightly sinuate. Petioles thick, arising 0.3–1 cm from base of blade, 1.2–11 cm long, densely tomentose. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers up to 10 per axillary cluster, densely pubescent, pedicels ca. 3–18 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, pedicellate. Calyx more or less oblique, 10–18 mm long, shortly or conspicuously 3–4– toothed, tomentose externally. Corolla probably greenish yellow, the tube exserted, 12–14 mm long, 4-lobed, the lobes fleshy, broadly ovate, 5–7 mm long, ca. 5 mm wide, densely tomentose except on margins, margins with narrow undulate wings. Stamens 4, slightly exserted; filaments extremely short to absent; anthers linear, acute, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 2-celled, conical-cylindrical, ca. 2 mm long, ca. 1 mm in diameter; ovules numerous; style ca. 3.5 mm long; stigma 2-lobed.

Fruit: Berries orange; ellipsoid; 13–14 mm long; apex apparently truncate. Seeds numerous; irregular in outline; angular; seed coat impressed–punctate; 2– 2.5 mm in diameter.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Very rare; known only from a few collections in diverse mesic.

Elevation Range: 915–1,220 m.
