Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees ca. 5 m tall.

Stems: Stems muricate to aculeate at least when young.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades broadly obovate, blades 30–50 cm long, 9–16 cm wide. Apex rounded or obtuse. Upper surfaces papillose; lower surfaces pubescent. Margins lobed or cleft toward apex and at middle, parted or divided at base, the lobes rounded or obtuse. Petioles ca. 4 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx lobes ca. 4 mm long. Corolla glabrous. Stamens 5, alternate with corolla lobes, connate. Ovary inferior, 2-celled; ovule placentation axile; stigma 2-lobed, wet or dry, appressed and nonreceptive as the style grows through the anther tube, pushing out the pollen, after which the stigmas spread apart and become receptive.

Fruit: Fruit unknown.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Known only from the type (Hillebrand 99; K) collected at 915–1;220 m on the leeward slopes of Haleakalā; East Maui.
