Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 30–40 m tall.

Stems: Bark reddish brown or brown to gray, fibrous throughout.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate to broadly lanceolate, 8–13 cm long, 1.5–3 cm wide. Apex uncinate or acuminate. Blades discolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 12–16 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7–11 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles 10–20 mm long, pedicels 5–13 mm long. buds cylindrical to rostrate, 7–13 mm long, 3–4 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum rostrate. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit globose or ovoid; 9–16 mm long; 9–15 mm wide; valves included or level. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Planted on Kaua'i; O'ahu; Moloka'i; Maui; and Hawai'i; and at least regenerating from seed in these areas.
