Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs or small trees 3–10 m tall.

Stems: Stems many-branched, glabrous or rarely sparsely short–hirsute, the hairs in a line.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades oblong–elliptic to oblanceolate or occasionally broadly obovate, 52–135 mm long, 15 –42 mm wide. Apex acuminate. Base attenuate to cuneate. Surfaces glabrous, rarely pubescent on midrib toward base; blades thin, coriaceous. Margins entire. Pinnately veined, the veins not especially conspicuous. Petioles 6–30 mm long, upper side more or less pilose. Stipules 5–11 mm long, connate ⅓–1⁄2 their length, glabrous or pilose at base, margins sparsely to occasionally densely pilose and dentate with a series of appendages, apex short–acuminate or attenuate and with a conspicuous appendage.

Flowers: Flowers 3–4(5) per cluster, 5–8-merous, peduncles (1–)5–18 mm long, glabrous. Flowers unisexual, dioecious, often heterostylous; insect-pollinated. Calyx of staminate flowers cup-shaped, 0.6–1 mm long, irregularly toothed, the teeth whitish, more or less ciliate. Calyx of pistillate flowers cup-shaped, ca. 0.5 mm long, minutely toothed. Corolla of staminate flowers funnelform, 5.3–8 mm long, the lobes 2.2–3 mm long; corolla of pistillate flowers narrowly funnelform, 3.5–5 mm long, the lobes 1.4–1.5 mm long; nectary disk usually present. Stamens 4-5(-10), alternate with the corolla lobes, inserted at base of corolla tube; filaments long-exserted; anthers penduous, dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary inferior, occasionally partly so, or very rarely superior, 2(-4)-celled; ovule 1 per cell, basal, anatropous; style as many as carpels, 2(-4)lobed, divided nearly to base, terminal, slender; stigmas lobed or capitate, long-exserted, papillose-hirsute, dry or occasionally wet.

Fruit: Fruit drupaceous; juicy; bright orange to reddish orange; ellipsoid; 10–15 mm long; apex naked; with 2(-4); 1-seeded; planoconvex pyrenes. Seeds with well-developed oily endosperm; or endosperm occasionally scanty or absent.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Wet and occasionally mesic forests.

Elevation Range: 360–1,900 m.
