Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Margins entire or sometimes toothed or lobed. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in usually in axillary pairs subtended by 2 bracts and 4 bracteoles or in whorls at the ends of the branches, in basically cymose inflorescences. Flowers bisexual (perfect), showy and fragrant. Calyx 4–5-lobed. Corolla zygomorphic to sometimes nearly actinomorphic, elongate, tubular to funnelform, often gibbours at base, 4–5-lobed. Stamens inserted on the corolla tube, usually exserted; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary inferior 2–3(–5)-celled; ovule placentation axile, pendulous, anatropous; style 1.

Fruit: Several–seeded berry. Seeds with oily; fleshy endosperm.
