Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees or arborescent shrubs 5–10(–20) m tall.

Stems: Bark gray, shallowly fissured.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades ovate to deltate or orbicular, 5–30 cm long. Apex usually acuminate. Base cordate. Surfaces shiny yellowish green, glabrous, usually obscurely glandular punctate; lower surfaces with an elongate gland on midrib near base. Margins entire. Petioles usually more than ½ as long as blades. Stipules present, caducous, or absent.

Flowers: Flowers axillary, solitary or in cymes, collectively often forming spicate to paniculate or even head-like inflorescences, +/- with an involucel subtending the calyx, the bracts distinct or basally connate. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx cuplike, composed of connate sepals, essentially truncate, 8–12 mm long at anthesis, valvate in bud, enlarging and flattening in fruit. Corolla actinomorphic to moderately zygomorphic, corolla of 5 petals, yellow, usually with a maroon spot at base, obliquely obovate, distinct from each other but adnate at base to staminal column, crinkled apically 4–7 cm long. Stamens 5 to numerous, monadelphous, forming a staminal column, yellow, up to 3 cm long, usually included, densely antheriferous for most of its length, apex 5-toothed; anthers monothecal. Pollen globose, echinate. Ovary superior, (3–)5-celled, the carpels borne in a single whorl or rarely seemingly superposed whorls; ovules 3 to several per cell, placentation axile; style exceeding the staminal column, unbranched, 5-grooved and twisted; stigmas decurrent.

Fruit: Capsules depressed–globose; leathery; obscurely 5–angled; 2.5–4.5 cm in diameter; dehiscing irregularly with age. Seeds grayish brown; 8–15 mm long; glabrate to densely brown pubescent angled-turbinate; with or without endosperm.

Ploidy: 2n = 24; 26; 28

Habitat: Occurring in protected coastal sites.

Elevation Range: 0–275 m.

Uses and Culture

USES

  • Milo may have been brought by the Polynesians for wood and fiber (Wagner et al. 1990:902); made into "beautiful bowls" for poi (Krauss 1993:22; Malo 1951:23); fruit for yellowish-green dye (Krauss 1993:66); canoe hulls (Abbott 1992:80). Young leaves edible (Lucas 1982: 56). In the Ethnology Collection at Bishop Museum there is a post-contact example of the wood made into a bowl. An archaeologial site on Lāni‘i yielded a house post identfied as milo.

  • Yellowish green dye (fruit wall)

CULTURE

  • He milo ka la‘au, mimilo ke aloha. Milo is the plant; love goes round and round.

  • There were apparently many milo surrounding the home of Kamehameha I at Waikiki.

PROPAGATION/CULTIVATION

  • The leathery seed capsules of Thespesia populnea are spherical and 1 to 2 inches in diameter. The grayish brown seeds are 1/4 to 1/2 inch long. The capsules generally open at maturity releasing about eight seeds. The capsules can also be opened by hand and the seeds removed.
  • The seeds should be scarified (the seed coat penetrated). This can be done using sandpaper, nail clippers, or by cracking with a hammer. Care must be taken to avoid damaging the inner part of the seed. The seeds do not require soaking. The seeds should be planted in sterile potting mix at a depth of about twice the diameter of the seed. Germination takes 14 to 28 days. (NTBG 1996; Wagner 1990) [Data from Herring, E.
