Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 30–70 m tall.

Stems: Bark grayish brown, fibrous on most of trunk, white to yellowish gray and smooth above.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate, 9–16 cm long, 1.6–3 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades concolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 10–20 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7–15 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles flattened, 10–17 mm long, pedicels 3–6 mm long. buds fusiform to clavate, 7–9 mm long, 3–5 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical or rostrate. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit hemispherical to subglobose; 6–11 mm long; 7–11 mm wide; valves included or level. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Widely planted on Kaua'i; O'ahu; Moloka'i; Maui; and Hawai'i; and at least regenerating from seed in these areas.
