Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Lianas or, when young, scandent shrubs.

Stems: Branches widely spreading, covered with prominent, slightly raised lenticels.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades obovate to elliptic or rarely suborbicular, 3.5–19 cm long, those more than 14 cm long probably on young growth, 1.4–9.8 cm wide. Apex rounded or occasionally bluntly acuminate. Base cuneate. Surfaces glabrous or rarely pubescent, conspicuously punctate; blades membranous, thin or occasionally somewhat thickened. Margins entire, occasionally wavy–crenate on young growth. Reticulate-veined, midrib and lateral veins more prominent and often red. Petioles 4–10 mm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary, racemose inflorescences 15–45(–60) mm long, glabrous or occasionally glandular puberulent, rarely reddish pubescent with multicellular hairs. Flowers unisexual (and the plants dioecious). Pedicels 5–6 mm long, bracteolate at base. Calyx deeply 4–5-lobed, cleft nearly to base or sepals up to slightly over ⅓ connate, the lobes ovate, imbricate, ca. 1 mm long, glabrous, rarely reddish pubescent with multicellular hairs. Corolla of 4–5 petals, greenish, distinct, ca. 3–4 m long, densely punctate, narrowly imbricate in bud. Stamens slightly more than ½ as long as petals, inserted near base of petals, sterile in pistillate flowers. Ovary superior; ovules 3 in a single row; style short; stigma capitate. Staminate flowers with a rudimentary ovary.

Fruit: Drupes dark purple; depressed–globose; 7–11 mm in diameter; endocarp crustaceous; style not persistent. Seeds 1 per fruit; subglobose.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Scattered in mesic to occasionally wet forest.

Elevation Range: (125–)450–1,650 m.
