Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 2–8 m tall; glabrous with milky sap.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Whorled (3–4 per node). Blades elliptic to oblanceolate, blades (3.5–)6–15(–19) cm long, (1.3–)2.5–4.6(–6) cm wide. Apex acute to rounded, rarely retuse. Base cuneate. Surfaces glabrous. Margins entire. Lateral veins conspicuous especially on lower surface, arising at nearly right angles to the midrib. Most of the secondary veins anastomosing and conspicuous. Petioles 0.8–2.56 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in relatively open inflorescences. Flowers subtended by small, opposite, ovate bracts. Primary peduncles 2.3–4 cm long, secondary ones 0.6–2(–3) cm long, pedicels 0–5 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect), usually numerous. Calyx deeply 5-lobed, the lobes ovate, imbricate; 3–4 mm long. Corolla salverform, 5-lobed, the tube cylindrical, the lobes greenish white to white, oblong–elliptic; tube 10–11 mm long, the lobes 7–11 mm long. Stamens 5, inserted on the corolla tube just below the mouth but not exserted. Ovary superior, 2, distinct or basally connate; ovules 2–4 per ovary; style connate in the upper ⅓; stigma bifid.

Fruit: Fruit drupaceous; firm and fleshy; drying hard; usually both ovaries maturing. drupes yellow or plum–colored streaked with brown; robust; ovoid to lanceoloid–ellipsoid; often with irregular ridges at maturity due to differential thickening of the exocarp; (3.8–)5–6 cm long; (2.3–)2.8–3.6 cm wide. Seeds 1 per fruit; ovate; strongly flattened.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Scattered in dry to mesic forest; often on lava.

Elevation Range: 700–1,200 m.
