Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Somewhat fleshy, small herbs 1–3 dm tall, glabrous.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades oblong–ovate or elliptic–ovate, lowest ones 2–3 cm long, 0.3–0.6 cm wide, upper ones scale-like, ca. 0.3–0.5 cm long. Margins entire. Sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers solitary in the leaf axils. Flowers bisexual (perfect); pedicels capillary, 10–25 mm long. Calyx ca. 1–1.5 mm long, deeply 5–cleft. Corolla pale blue, ca. 3 mm long, bilabiate, upper lip overlapping lower lip in bud, 2-lobed, lower lip much larger, 3-lobed, the lobes spreading. Stamens 2, with 2 staminodes included in corolla tube. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, with as many cells; ovule placentation axile; stigma 2-lobed.

Fruit: Capsules globose to ovoid; 2–3 mm long. Seeds ovoid; ca. 0.2 mm long; transversely and laterally ribbed.

Ploidy: 2n = 28

Habitat: Sparingly naturalized in Hanalei and Hanapepe valleys in and around taro patches.

Elevation Range: near sea level.
