Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Dioecious trees 4–10(–20) m tall.

Stems: With colored sap.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, often peltate. Blades peltate, ovate to oblong–ovate, 8–30 cm long. Margins entire. Petioles 6–25 cm long. Stipules oblong to narrowly ovate, 1–3 cm long, quickly deciduous.

Flowers: Flowers in staminate flowers in open panicles 13–35 cm long, bracts pale green to yellowish green pistillate flowers in panicles 8–30 cm long. Flowers unisexual. Calyx valvate in bud, variously colored; staminate flower pale green to yellowish green, Calyx subglobose, 3–4-lobed or 3–4-toothed; calyx of pistillate flowers urceolate or cupuliform, lobed or divided, persistent. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens in staminate flower (3)4–6 (–10); anthers tetrathecal; pistillate flower stamens absent. Ovary superior (pistillate flowers), 2–3-celled; styles 5–8 mm long. Staminate flower ovary absent.

Fruit: Capsules 2–3–valved; 10–12 mm long; covered with pale waxy glands and soft; scattered; elongate; spine-like processes. Seeds with a fleshy seedcoat.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Disturbed mesic valleys.

Elevation Range: 0–220 m.
