Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Glabrous, ± glaucous perennial herbs.

Stems: Stems hollow, 5–20 dm long, rarely branched, producing vegetatively by adventitious shoots from base.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple (lower and uppermost), the middle ones usually compound (pinnate). Opposite. Blades elliptic, 5–20 cm long, 2–10 cm wide, blades flat; often deciduous at anthesis; compound leaves with 3–5 leaflets. Surfaces ± glaucous. Margins crenate, sometimes producing bulbils. Petioles 2–10 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in paniculate cymes 20–80 cm long, each one pendent on pedicels 1–2.5 cm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect), erect, 4-merous. Calyx of 4 sepals, pale yellow, streaked with red, connate, cylindrical, inflated and papery, the tube 2.5–4.5 cm long, the lobes ca. 1 cm long. Corolla of 4 petals; petals distinct or sometimes connate near base. corolla tubular, constricted above the ovaries, 4-lobed, 3–6 cm long, the exserted part maroon, sparsely glandular pubescent. Stamens (4)8; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, carpels 4 (connivent), erect, (nearly distinct); base tapered; styles mostly 2+ times shorter than ovary.

Fruit: Follicles. Seeds minute; endosperm scanty or absent.

Ploidy: 2n = 34; 36; 38; 40

Habitat: Naturalized and sometimes very abundant in low elevation; dry to mesic; disturbed areas.
