Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs or small trees 2–6 m tall, watery sap.

Stems: Branches usually stout, with grayish brown to reddish brown bark, grayish to whitish tomentose or appressed hirsute, ± glabrate with age.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades ovate to elliptic, occasionally rhombic–ovate or elliptic–lanceolate, (5–)7–20 cm long, (2.2–)3–15 cm wide, leaves of young growth up to 41 cm long and 30 cm wide. Apex acuminate to acute. Base subcordate to rounded or broadly cuneate. Surfaces hirsute at least along veins, sometimes sparsely or moderately so over entire surface, hairs usually appressed, areoles moderately to densely woolly pubescent, completely obscuring surface, or the center of the areole less densely woolly and appearing pitted, occasionally areoles only glaucous; upper surfaces sometimes somewhat glaucous, veins moderately to densely appressed hirsute or spreading short–hirtellous; usually dark green on upper surface, dull to somewhat glossy, relatively thin to thick, firm-chartaceous to coriaceous, the areoles flat to conspicuously raised, the surfaces smooth or conspicuously papillate, smooth or scabrid to the touch, punctiform cystoliths ± conspicuous; lower surfaces dull white to gray or olive gray, veins slightly to moderately raised, ± red; cystoliths present. Margins coarsely serrate to crenate. Veins flat to strongly impressed, pinnately veined toward apex. Petioles stout, (0.5–)2–8(–12) cm long, young growth up to 16 cm long, gray hirsute, the hairs spreading or appressed. Stipules thin to somewhat thickened, (2.5–) 4–11 mm long, 2–6 mm wide, ± 2–lobed, hirsute in lower part or only along veins, caducous or slightly persisting.

Flowers: Flowers in sessile axillary clusters, bracts small. clusters ca. 4–10 mm in diameter. Flowers unisexual, plants monoecious, with flower clusters progressively more pistillate toward apex of branches, or plants dioecious, Pistillate flower receptacle constituting a condensed peduncle, pedicel and true receptacle becoming globose, white and fleshy. Calyx of staminate flowers herbaceous, 4-lobed, the lobes about as long as the tube, 1.5–2.5 mm long, gray tomentose to hirsute or puberulent; pistillate Calyx tubular, herbaceous, narrowed toward apex, apex minutely 4–5-toothed, enlarging in fruit, (0.8–)1–1.3 mm long, enlarging to 1.5–2.5 mm long in fruit, gray hirsute, tomentose, or puberulent in upper part, glabrate toward base. Corolla (petals) absent. Staminate flowers filaments incurved in bud, elastically reflexed when pollen is shed; anthers versatile, caducous, dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits; pistillate flowers staminode absent. Ovary superior (pistillate flowers), enclosed by calyx, psuedomonomerous, 1-celled; ovule 1, basal; style 1; stigma filiform, exserted caducous after anthesis. Staminate flowers have pistillode, ovary vestigial and sterile.

Fruit: Achenes pale brown to pale gray or yellowish brown; conical–ovoid to ovoid; rarely obovoid; 0.9–1.7 mm long; ± constricted below; closely enclosed by dry calyx; but distinct from it; embedded in the fleshy receptacle. Seeds 1 per achene; with very little endosperm; cotyledons broad.

Ploidy: 2n = 28

Habitat: Mesic valleys; mesic to wet forest; and diverse mesic forest.

Elevation Range: (0–)70–1,870 m.

PROPAGATION/CULTIVATION

  • The very tiny seeds of Pipturus albidus form in a small white fruit. The seeds are oval and pale brown, pale gray or yellow brown.
  • The seeds need to be removed from the fruit pulp before planting. Lilleeng-Rosenberger suggests ripening the fruit in a plastic bag to soften the pulp. After this, the seeds can be removed from the pulp more easily. This can be done by rubbing the fruits in a strainer under running water, or by manually crushing the fruits in a bowl of water to separate the seeds from the pulp. The viable seeds will sink and the fruit pulp and other debris can be poured off. Rinse the seeds a few times and pour a mixture of water and seeds on the surface of moist, fine textured, well-compacted medium. Cleaned seeds can also be dried on a paper towel for storing.
  • Keep the containers in a partially shady location and keep the medium moist. The seeds will begin to germinate in 2 to 3 weeks. Two year old plants will produce fruit. (Bornhorst 1996; Hamasaki 1999; Koob 1999; Lilleeng-Rosenberger 1998; Wagner 1990)
  • Bornhorst writes that Pipturus albidus can be easily grown from 4 to 6 inch long cuttings. However, Koob states that it is difficult to propagate from cuttings.
