Key Characters:

Growth Form: Apparently short-lived perennials.

Stems: culms tufted, slender, 5–40 cm tall, 0.3–0.5 mm in diameter.

Roots: Fibrous root system.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Leaves few. Blades filiform, 0.5–1 mm wide, shorter than the culm. Margins inrolled. Sheathing; sheaths reddish brown. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences simple, of 1–3(4) spikelets, rays filiform, 1–3 cm long, each terminated by a single spikelet; involucral bracts 1–2, setaceous, shorter than the inflorescence; spikelets orangish brown when fresh, becoming pale brown when dry, subterete, ovoid to ellipsoid– ovoid, 5–14 mm long, 3–5 mm wide, apex abruptly acute; glumes thin, chartaceous, slightly glossy, broadly ovate, 3–3.2 mm long, 3–3.5 mm wide, several–veined, apex rounded; style ca. 2 mm long, flattened, conspicuously fimbriate above the middle, slightly dilated at base. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 3. Ovary superior; stigmas 2.

Fruit: Achenes cream to yellowish brown; obovoid to obovoid–globose; lenticular; 1.2–1.5 mm long and wide; faintly reticulate–puncticulate; apex rounded; base short–stipitate. Seeds 1; seed coat thin; free from pericarp; embryo basal; endosperm abundant.

Ploidy: 2n = 2n = 10

Habitat: Disturbed area.
