Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Herbaceous vines.

Stems: Stems angled, striate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades lanceolate to sometimes ovate, 2.8–10.7(–14) cm long, 1.4–4(–9) cm wide. Surfaces pubescent or glabrous, blades membranous. Margins entire or shallowly to deeply 3-lobed. Petioles 0.3–1.5 cm long, with 2 paired, stalked nectaries ca. 1 mm long and wide near apex. Stipules linear–lanceolate, 3–4 mm long.

Flowers: Flowers paired; peduncles 0.9–1.7 cm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect), campanulate, 0.5– 2.4 cm in diameter; Hypanthium ca. 0.1 cm long; corona white or white with purple base. Calyx of 5 sepals, greenish white. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 5(–8), on an androgynophore; anthers dithecal, versatile, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, stipitate, placentation parietal; ovules anatropous.

Fruit: Berries dark purple at maturity; globose; 0.6–1.9 cm in diameter; aril white. Seeds numerous; Seed coat reticulate; with an aromatic; succulent; edible aril; embryo embedded in copious oily; soft fleshy endosperm.

Ploidy: 2n = 12; 18; 24*; 36

Habitat: Grassland; shrubland; open dry forest; and diverse mesic forest; and on exposed ridges.

Elevation Range: 0–610 m.
