Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Margins entire or with a few shallow lobes. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers solitary. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, pendulous, pedicellate. Calyx tubular, 5-lobed or spathaceous, falling as a unit or persisting and enveloping the fruit. Corolla large, single or double (in cultivars), trumpet–shaped, 5-lobed, cuspidate. Stamens 5, adnate to base of tube; filaments slender; anthers linear, distinct, opening by slits. Ovary superior, 2-celled; style slender; stigma 2-lobed.

Fruit: Capsules; dehiscent 4–valved; smooth. Seeds numerous; compressed laterally; seed coat corky; embryo curved; endosperm present.
