Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Plants up to 80 cm tall, with short rhizomes with fibrous tunics.

Stems: Flowering stems subterete, usually with a large cauline leaf in the middle part, 30–80 cm long, usually longer than leaves, unbranched or occasionally branched.

Roots: Fibrous root system.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Usually distichous, usually isobilateral and unifacial. Blades narrowly lanceolate, about as long as stems, 1–2 cm wide. Surfaces glabrous. Margins entire. Veins parallel. Sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers several in terminal clusters enclosed by spathe-like bracts, spathes herbaceous, up to 2 cm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Tepals yellow with brownish markings, outer ones up to 2 cm long, spreading, inner ones with brownish purple spots at base and along middle, erect–ascending, up to 1.7 cm long. Stamens 3; filaments weak, to 5–6 mm long; anthers ca. 4 mm long, coherent to style branches. Ovary inferior, 3-carpellate, 3-celled, ca. 5 mm long; style ca. 9 mm long, crests vestigial.

Fruit: Capsules narrowly obovate; (1.2–)1.5–3 cm long. Seeds irregularly rounded to angular.
