Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Fleshy herbs.

Stems: Stems reddish purple to reddish green(?), erect to ascending from a repent base, 20–30(–40) cm long, ca. 2–4 mm in diameter toward base, branched, usually above the middle, internodes usually 2–6 cm long, glabrous.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Whorled [2–3(–6) per node]. Blades elliptic to ovate or elliptic–obovate, occasionally some of them obovate, 1.5–4 (–5) cm long, 1–2(–2.6) cm wide. Apex bluntly acute to acute. Base broadly cuneate to cuneate. Surfaces glabrous; upper surfaces dark green; lower surfaces pale green, firm–fleshy, drying somewhat coriaceous. Margins flat, ± ciliate. Palmately 3-veined, principal veins impressed on upper surface. Petioles 0.3–0.8(–1.5) cm long, glabrous. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in fleshy spikes several, spreading, axillary and terminal, 3.5–6 cm long, sometimes lateral ones as short as 2 cm long, the rachis ca.1.2–1.8 mm in diameter, glabrous, flowers loosely to moderately congested, peduncles 0.4–1.2 cm long, glabrous. Flowers bisexual (perfect), perianth absent. Each flower subtended by a peltate bract. Calyx (sepals) absent. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 2. Ovary superior, obovoid, 1-carpellate, 1-celled, apex oblique; ovules 1 per cell, orthotropous, erect; stigmas subterminal.

Fruit: Fruit obovoid to subglobose; ca. 1 mm long; papillose–viscid with sessile glands. Seeds 1 per fruit; with scanty endosperm and copious; starchy perisperm.

Ploidy: 2n = 88

Habitat: Wet forests.

Elevation Range: 1,150–2,070 m.
