Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs 1–2 m tall, watery sap.

Stems: Branches stout, angular, strigose.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades elliptic to ovate, sometimes broadly ovate, 12–25 cm long, 9–13 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Base truncate to subcordate. Upper surfaces sparsely strigose between veins; lower surfaces strigillose to short–hirtellous along veins, thick and somewhat coriaceous, with punctiform cystoliths; upper surfaces rugose. Margins serrate. Palmately 3-veined, pinnately veined toward apex. Petioles 2–7 cm long. Stipules interpetiolar, 5–6 cm long, strigose, caducous.

Flowers: Flowers in clusters ca. 2–4 mm in diameter, these arranged in open, branched panicles 8–15 cm long, with progressively more staminate flowers toward apex of each panicle, bracts ca. 3. Flowers unisexual (and the plants monoecious), actinomorphic. Calyx of staminate flowers (3)4(5)-lobed, the lobes valvate, ca. 2 mm long; pistillate Calyx tubular, ca. 1–1.5 mm long, puberulent to short–hirtellous, 2–4-toothed at apex, hispid, dry at maturity. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens (3)4(5) in staminate flowers; filaments puberulent, incurved in bud, elastically reflexed when pollen is shed; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits; pistillate flowers staminodes absent. Ovary superior; staminate ovary vestigial and sterile; pistillate ovary pseudomonomerous, 1-celled; ovule 1, basal; style 1; stigma filiform, somewhat persistent in fruit.

Fruit: Achenes somewhat compressed; ca. 1–1.5 mm long; coherent to calyx. Seeds 1 per fruit.

Ploidy: 2n = 28

Habitat: Along streambeds; on slopes; ridges; or valley floors; in mesic valleys; mesic to wet forest; and diverse mesic forest.

Elevation Range: 150–1,000 m.

  • This species was previously considered to represent Boehmeria stipularis (e.g., Hillebrand, 1888) of the Indian Ocean region. It was also considered to be closely related to B. platyphylla D. Don, a plant of Asia and many Pacific islands that differs in having connate stipules. Heller (1897) elevated the status of the Hawaiian populations to species without any comment other than, when considered conspecific with B. stipularis, it had an odd distribution. This species complex is greatly in need of critical revision.
