Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Sprawling and twining lianas.

Stems: Young stems pubescent.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades ovate, elliptic, oblong, or broadly lanceolate, blades 3–8 cm long, 1–3.5 cm wide. Surfaces pubescent, becoming glabrate above. Margins entire or young lower leaves sometimes lobed. Petioles 3-8 mm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in cymose inflorescences, flowers 2 in axillary cymes, bracts 1–2 cm long, bracteoles suborbicular, ca.1 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect), showy and fragrant. Calyx 4–5-lobed. Corolla elongate, tubular to funnelform, often gibbours at base, 4–5-lobed, corolla white, turning yellowish or tinged pink, 2-lipped, 2–3 cm long. Stamens inserted on the corolla tube; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile, pendulous, anatropous; style 1.

Fruit: Berries bluish black; globose; 6–7 mm in diameter. Seeds with oily; fleshy endosperm. This species does not usually produce fruit in Hawai‘i. If a fertile strain develops; it could become an extremely serious weed; as it has in other areas. Recently; G. Linney (pers. comm.) reported that most plants in Mānoa Valley; O‘ahu; set seed.

Ploidy: 2n = 18

Habitat: Cultivated and now escaping and becoming naturalized in mesic to wet areas in Kōke‘e State Park; Kaua‘i; and near Volcano and slopes of Hualālai; Hawai‘i.
