Growth Form: Annual or perennial herbs.

Stems: Stems prostrate to ascending, sometimes rooting at the nodes.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Petiolate or sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary, head-like spikes. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Each flower subtended by a bract and 2 bracteoles. Calyx of 5 sepals, often unequal, membranous. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 5, sometimes not all fertile, pseudostaminodes minute; anthers monothecal. Ovary superior; stigma 1, capitate.

Fruit: Fruit in dehiscent flattened utricle. Seeds lenticular.
