1 Gardenia lamingtonii Wahiawa Bot. Garden, Kuraoka Terrace. Provenance: New Guinea, collected by Thane Pratt small trees growing along fence on Clark Place side of terrace. In partial sun, under canopy of larger trees in canopy. Grid square B-5 on map of Kuraoka Terrace Preserved_Specimen Treelet ca 3 m tall, densely branched and twiggy; leaves opposite, in clusters along stems, dark green and shiny; flowers brown and senescent, appearing long-tubular with flaring lobes; fruits globose, brown, hard, capped by tubular calyx at apex, ripe fruits splitting apically with edges recurved, pulp bright orange, soft, with many seeds embedded inside. Old fruits presist on branches as circular coils of fibres. Something (rat?, bird?) has been eating pulp from ripe fruits and splattering it onto foliage and ground below, so this Gardenia has a dispersal agent for seeds Staples, G.W. 1612 Oahu BISH 2014-12-17
