Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 30–60 m tall.

Stems: Bark brown to reddish brown, softly fibrous throughout.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate, 8–13 cm long, 1.5–2.5 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades discolorous. Margins usually crenulate. Petioles 8–15 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7–9 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles flattened, 6–18 mm long, pedicels 2–7 mm long. buds clavate, 4–7 mm long, 2–3 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum hemispherical, often with crossed ribs. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit obconical; 4–10 mm long; 3–6 mm wide; valves 3–4; barely exserted to barely included. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Planted on Kaua'i; O'ahu; Moloka'i; Maui; and Hawai'i; and regenerating both within and adjacent to the plantations.
