Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 20–35 m tall.

Stems: Bark grayish brown to brown, tessellate throughout.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate to broadly lanceolate, 10–14 cm long, 2–4 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades discolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 10–22 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7 in umbels arranged in terminal, corymbose inflorescences, peduncles 17–30 mm long, pedicels 9–14 mm long. buds obovoid to clavate, 9–13 mm long, 5–8 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum slightly beaked to conical to rounded. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit urceolate; 15–20 mm long; 11–15 mm wide; valves included. Seeds sometimes marginally winged.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Planted on Kaua'i and O'ahu; and often occurring outside the plantations.
