Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Erect or sprawling shrubs, sometimes shrubby trees 1–4 m tall, new growth finely scurfy and sparsely to densely grayish puberulent, becoming glabrate.

Stems:

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite or sometimes (O‘ahu) in whorls of 3–4 per node. Blades narrowly to broadly elliptic or suborbicular. Apex rounded and usually emarginate, sometimes obtuse. Base broadly cuneate, rounded, or cordate. Surfaces glabrous or very sparsely puberulent along midrib; usually with a strong anise odor when crushed; upper surfaces darker green, coriaceous, 3–23 cm long, 2–12 cm wide. Margins often revolute near base, margins entire. Midrib often tinged red or purple, primary lateral veins usually 8–12 pairs, lateral veins connected by an arched submarginal vein, higher order venation forming a reticulate pattern. Petioles 13–40(–50) mm long, glabrate or sometimes puberulent. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 3–10(–21) in minutely grayish puberulent to glabrate cymes, peduncles stout, (7–)15–40 mm long, pedicels usually stout, 3–6 mm long, bracteoles lanceolate, upper ones deltate, 1–3 mm long, minutely ciliate and sparsely puberulent, bracts small, opposite. Flowers bisexual (perfect) or functionally unisexual (and then plants monoecious). Calyx of 4 sepals; sepals imbricate, staminate flowers with sepals deltate–ovate, ca. 2 mm long, sparsely puberulent, pistillate flowers with sepals deltate–ovate, ca. 2 mm long, sparsely puberulent. Corolla of 4 petals, valvate, staminate flowers petals narrowly ovate, ca. 7–8 mm long, glabrous, pistillate flowers petals narrowly ovate, 5–6 mm long, glabrous. Stamens 8, in 2 whorls, distinct, reduced but always present in functionally pistillate flowers, nectary disk glabrous, pistillate flowers Stamens reduced. Ovary superior (pistillate flowers), 4-celled and 4-lobed, glabrous, carpels connate; ovules 2 per cell, hemitropous, 1 ascending; style 1, reddish, filiform, ca. 2 mm long, terminating in 4 short stigmatic branches; staminate flowers ovary rudimentary.

Fruit: Capsules usually dark green; ca. 6–14 mm long; 13–28 mm wide; carpels completely connate to connate ca. ⅔ their length; exocarp glabrous; glandular punctate; endocarp glabrous. the carpels dehiscing along the upper suture; exocarp. Seeds usually 2 per carpel; ca. 4–7 mm long; glossy black when ripe; crustaceous; ovoid; sometimes angled from compression; embryo straight in fleshy endosperm; radicle short; cotyledons compressed; ovate; putamen brown; warty.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Mesic forest.
