Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 5–15 m tall.

Leaves: Leaves compound (bipinnate). Opposite. Blades with 13–31 pinnae, each with 13–41 sessile leaflets, these 0.3–1.2 cm long, 0.1–0.4 cm wide. Surfaces glabrous or slightly puberulent along the midrib and margins. Leaflet margins entire. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in open, terminal panicles, the branches puberulent. Flowers bisexual (perfect), usually large and showy. Calyx reduced, broadly campanulate, 5-toothed, the teeth ca. 1 mm long. Corolla purplish blue, the tube white withink 2.4–5.2 cm long, 0.7–1.2 cm wide at the mouth, pubescent externally and within at the level of the stamens. Fertile stamens 4, in 2 series, staminode 1, elongate, pubescent at apex; filaments attached to corolla tube, alternate with the lobes; anthers usually dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 2-celled, placentation axile or in 1-celled ovary with 2 or 4 intruded parietal placentas; ovules numerous per cell, rarely 1, anatropous or hemitropous, often erect; style 1; stigma 2-lobed.

Fruit: Fruit usually a bivalved; dehiscent capsules; very often with a septum; rarely fleshy and indehiscent; an oblong to orbicular woody capsules strongly flattened at right angles to the septum. capsules drying reddish brown; compressed–orbicular; 3.2–5.8 cm long; apex often shallowly emarginate; base truncate to subcordate. Seeds flat; often winged; endosperm absent; rarely present and oily; 0.9–1.2 cm long; the wing ± surrounding the seed body.

Ploidy: 2n = 36; 66

Habitat: Naturalized in relatively dry to mesic areas.
