Key Characters:

Growth Form: Mostly herbs, some shrubs and small trees often roughly hairy.

Stems: Herbaceous or woody.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate or rarely opposite at base of plant. Surfaces hairy. Margins nearly always entire. Petiolate to sessile; non–sheathing, or sheathing. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences terminal, or axillary, flowers arranged in a scorpioid cyme. Flowers radially symmetric. Calyx mostly with 5 distinct lobes. Corolla with 5 lobes typically connate and with a small appendages in the throat. Stamens 5. Ovary superior, 4-lobed, carpels 2 or rarely 4–5.; ovules 1 per lobe; style gynobasic; stigma 1, 2, or 4 lobed.

Fruit: Loculicidal capsules.
