Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Small many-branched trees.

Stems: Branches reddish brown, puberulent.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades elliptic, oblanceolate, or broadly lanceolate, 3–5.5 cm long, 1.5–2 cm wide. Apex acute to short-acuminate. Base cuneate. Upper surfaces glabrous; lower surfaces sparsely brownish puberulent. Margins entire and slightly revolute. Midrib prominent and submarginal vein present, venation otherwise inconspicuous. Petioles 1–30 mm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers ca. 4 in bracteolate fascicles arising on small woody knobs below the leaves. Pedicels slender, 5–9 mm long, sparsely puberulent. Calyx 4–5(6)-lobed, usually deeply so, the lobes imbricate or valvate in bud, punctate or with secretory lines, lobes 1–1.5 mm long, sparsely puberulent externally, glabrous within, margins ciliate. Petals not seen. Stamens not seen. Ovary superior, 1-celled; ovules few in a single row, ovary reduced and sterile or absent in staminate flowers.

Fruit: Drupes ca. 5 mm in diameter (immature). Seeds 1 per fruit.
