Key Characters:

Growth Form: Scandent subshrubs or lianas.

Stems: Stems densely to sparsely villous, pilose, or antrorsely strigose, glabrate with age.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades ovate to elliptic, (6.5–)11–16 cm long, (2–)4.5–7 cm wide. Apex obtuse to acute, occasionally acuminate, or rarely rounded. Base broadly to narrowly cuneate. Upper surfaces glabrate to sparsely appressed villous, pilose, or puberulent, occasionally only along veins; lower surfaces densely villous (hairs sometimes somewhat appressed), puberulent, or glabrate; blades somewhat thick and chartaceous or relatively thin and membranous. Margins crenate to serrate–crenate, sometimes shallowly so. Petioles (2.1–) 2.5–4 cm long, villous primarily along lateral margins to evenly villous or glabrate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 6–18 per verticillaster, in unbranched, elongate, racemose inflorescences 5–16 cm long, pedicels 6–30 mm long, densely villous, antrorsely strigose, or glabrate, not glandular–dotted, bracts elliptic to narrowly ovate, 15–30 mm long, lowermost pair larger, 30–75 mm long, pubescence same as that of leaves. Calyx narrowly obconical, (6–)7–11 mm long at anthesis, enlarging in fruit; pubescence same as that of pedicels, sometimes confined to prominent nerves; usually 5-toothed, the teeth oblong to narrowly or broadly deltate, sometimes unequally divided, 2–4 mm long, apex rounded to acute; splitting longitudinally, usually persistent or sometimes only ventral 1/2 persistent. Corolla bilabiate, white, occasionally tinged pink, tube narrowly funnelform, 12–14 mm long, usually curved, sparsely pubescent to glabrate, upper lip 8–15 mm long, emarginate to deeply 2-lobed, lower lip 16–19 mm long, 3-lobed, lateral lobes ovate, slightly asymmetrical, lower lobe broadly ovate to suborbicular, slightly folded to form a groove, margins somewhat undulate, apex emarginate or entire; nectary disk often present at base of ovary, annular or devloped on anterior side only. Stamens 4, ascending the upper corolla lip, included, aligned with the sinuses; filaments inserted near throat, usually pubescent; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits; anther sacs divaricate. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, placentation basal-axile; ovules 1 per ovary lobe; style 1, included, shortly 2-lobed, the lobes clavate; stigmatic only at apex, 1 lobe often rudimentary; stigmas 2.

Fruit: Nutlets ca. 8–12 mm long. Seeds with endosperm absent or scanty and oily.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Scattered in wet forest and perhaps lower parts of subalpine forest.

Elevation Range: 915–1,980 m.
