Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Vines.

Stems: Stems twining or sometimes prostrate, herbaceous, slender, up to ca. 3 m long, glabrate or sometimes pilose.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades ovate to cordate, 2.7-9 cm long. Apex acuminate or apiculate. Base cordate. Surfaces pubescent or glabrate; blades chartaceous. Margins entire. Petioles about as long as blades. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers solitary or several, usually axillary, peduncles 3.5-4 cm long, pedicels 10-20 mm long, bracts scalelike. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, 5-merous. Calyx of 5 sepals, distinct, imbricate, herbaceous to subcoriaceous, equal or unequal, narrowly to broadly ovate, 4-8 mm long, minutely verrucose, glabrous or sparsely pilose, margins scarious, apex acute or apiculate; often somewhat enlarging in fruit but not markedly accrescent, persistent, occasionally accrescent. Corolla of 5 fused petals; petals yellow or orange to white, usually the limb white and nectar-guides yellow, the throat purple or brown-tinged, campanulate, 1.4-2.5 cm long. Stamens 5, distinct; included or rarely exserted; filaments inserted on corolla tube base alternate with corolla lobes; anthers dithecal, usually linear or oblong, extrorse. Ovary superior, 2–4-carpellate, usually with as many cells, placentation basal or basal-axile; ovules 2(4, 6) per cell, or ovary 1-celled and ovules 4, these erect, anatropous; style 1, filiform, simple or bifid, or sometimes with 2 distinct style; stigma globose or 2–3-lobed, the lobes globose.

Fruit: Capsules brown; globose; 0.8-1.2 cm long; glabrous; dehiscent by 4 valves or rarely 6 valves; or splitting irregularly. Seeds 1-4; black; ovoid; 5-5.5 mm long; appressed pubescent or velvety pubescent; endosperm absent or scanty; cartilaginous; cotyledons usually foliaceous.

Ploidy: 2n = 30

Habitat: Naturalized in dry; disturbed areas.

Elevation Range: 3–250 m.
