Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Perennials forming tussocks, up to 20–30 cm in diameter.

Stems: Culms short, tightly packed, densely leafy, usually 3-15 cm long, repeatedly branched, the branches erect.

Roots: Roots fibrous.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, closely imbricate. Blades flat, lanceolate, often twisted or concave, usually 0.8-6.5 cm long, (3-)3.5-8(-10) mm wide. Surfaces glabrous except margins coarsely ciliate nearly throughout with long, stiff, pustulate-based hairs. Veins parallel, many nerved. Sheaths densely hispid or hirsute to glabrous; ligule 0.5-1.5 mm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Panicles few-flowered, 1-2 cm long, not or only slightly exserted above the leaves, glabrous throughout; spikelets 1.8-2 mm long; first glume ca. 1/3 as long as spikelet. Palea of first floret ca. 2/3 as long as lemma of first floret

Fruit: Fruit a caryopsis.

Ploidy: 2n = 18

Habitat: Forming tussocks in open bogs.

Elevation Range: 910–1,850 m.
