Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate/spirally arranged. Blades various. Margins entire. Veins parallel or acrodromous. Petiolate or sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences or (rarely) solitary in some Haemodoraceae. Perfect or imperfect, perianth present. Calyx of 3 sepals. Corolla of 3 petals, typically larger than sepals often showy (similar to sepals in some pontederiaceae). Stamens 6. Ovary superior, 3-carpellate.

Fruit: Berries; drupes; or three–parted dehiscent capsules. Seeds with starchy endosperm.
