Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 10–25 m tall.

Stems: Sometimes mallees or shrubs ca. 10 m tall, bark dark gray or black, rough, hard, furrowed on trunk and larger branches, smaller branches gray to grayish brown, smooth.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate to broadly lanceolate, 8–14 cm long, 1–2.7 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades concolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 5–15 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 11–15 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles flattened, 17–30 mm long, pedicels absent. buds horn–shaped or narrowly cylindrical, 21–38 mm long, 5–10 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum horn-shaped. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit hemispherical or campanulate; crowded; 7–14 mm long; 6–13 mm wide; valves 3; exserted. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Planted and occurring sporadically on the island of Hawai'i.
