Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs.

Stems: Stems erect to decumbent. stems 30–60 cm long, many-branched.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades obovate to elliptic or oblanceolate, (1.9–)3.2–4 cm long, (0.8–)1.5–2 cm wide. Surfaces of young leaves sparsely pilose, usually glabrate with age. Margins usually entire or nearly so. Petioles 0.3–1.5 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in spikes 0.4–1.5 cm long, the rachis densely pubescent with spreading hairs, sessile. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx of 5 sepals, sepals unequal 3–4.2 mm long, apex acute. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 2–5, connate at base; anthers dithecal. Ovary superior; ovule 1; style slender; stigma capitate.

Fruit: Utricles unknown. Seeds 1 per fruit; the surface usually lustrous; endosperm essentially absent.
