Leaves: Leaves compound (pinnate or trifoliate), or sometimes simple. Alternate, rarely opposite or whorled. Pinnately compound, trifoliate, or sometimes simple. Petiolate. Stipules absent or rarely vestigial.

Flowers: Flowers in terminal or axillary panicles. Flowers bisexual (perfect) or unisexual with nonfunctional parts of the opposite sex usually present, actinomorphic. Calyx of (3)5(7) sepals, usually connate at base. Rarely absent. Corolla of (3)5(7) petals or petals rarely absent; petals distinct. Stamens 5–10 or more, in 1–2 whorls, rarely only 1 fertile; filaments distinct or sometimes connate at base, borne outside or upon the nectary disk; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary usually superior, sometimes inferior (1–)3–5(–12)-carpellate, carpels usually connate into a single compound ovary, rarely distinct, usually a single carpel developing; ovule placentation apical to basal; styles distinct or connate into a single column.

Fruit: Fruit usually a drupe with a resinous; waxy; or oily mesocarp. Seeds with an oily; curved to sometimes straight embryo; endosperm scanty or absent.
