Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs 1–3 m tall.

Stems: Stems unbranched, smooth to muricate or aculeate (densely so in juveniles).

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades dimorphic, juveniles oblong to obovate, blades 9–21 cm long, 4–7.5 cm wide; adults oblong to oblanceolate or obovate, blades 28–68 cm long, 7–20 cm wide. Apex of juvenilles acute to acuminate; adults apex acute to acuminate. Base juveniles base rounded to obtuse; adults base cuneate. Juveniles: Upper surfaces aculeate; lower surfaces pubescent and aculeate. Adults: Upper surfaces glabrous or sparsely muricate to minutely aculeate; lower surfaces pale green, glabrous or sparsely pubescent to sparsely muricate. Margins callose–dentate to lobed (juveniles) or callose–denticulate to callose–dentate (adults). Juveniles petioles 1.5–4 cm long, glabrous or pubescent, aculeate; adults petioles 6–19 cm long, glabrous or sparsely muricate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences 6–25–flowered, peduncles 20–90 mm long, pedicels 10–25 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect); hypanthium obconical, 5–9 mm long, 3–5 mm wide. Calyx lobes narrowly oblong to narrowly triangular, 3–7 mm long, 1–2 mm wide, apex acuminate. Corolla white, yellowish white with magenta stripes, or magenta, 42–54 mm long, 5–10 mm wide, glabrous or pubescent, the tube arcuate, the lobes spreading, ¼–1⁄2 as long as the tube. Stamens 5, alternate with corolla lobes, connate; staminal column glabrous; anthers glabrous, the lower 2 with apical tufts of white hairs. Ovary inferior, 2-celled; ovule placentation axile; stigma 2-lobed, wet or dry, appressed and nonreceptive as the style grows through the anther tube, pushing out the pollen, after which the stigmas spread apart and become receptive.

Fruit: Berries pale orange; ellipsoid; 8–10 mm long; 6–8 mm wide. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy:
