Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Annual herbs.

Stems: Stems erect or ascending, 1–5 dm long, unbranched or with a few branches from base, appressed pubescent to villous.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves compound. Alternate. Leaflets broadly obovate–cuneate to suborbicular, 10–25 mm long, 10–15 mm wide. Margins denticulate toward apex. Lateral veins ending at margins. Petiolate. Stipules elliptic, adnate to petioles ca. 3/5 their length.

Flowers: Flowers in heads, terminal, ovoid, 20–60 mm long, 0.1–15 mm in diameter, longer in fruit, peduncles 40–100 mm long. Flowers papilionaceous; pedicels 0–1 mm long, bracts absent, bracteoles absent. Calyx tube 2.7– 3.2 mm long, 10–nerved, densely villous, the throat closed by an annular callose thickening and a ring of hairs, the teeth subequal, linear, 5–7 mm long, spreading in fruit. Corolla blood–red, white, or pink, 10–12 mm long. Stamens 10; upper stamen distinct, the other 9 connate into a tube. Ovary superior.

Fruit: Pods ovoid; enclosed in calyx. Seeds 1 per fruit; greenish yellow to reddish brown; ovoid; 2–2.5 mm long.
