Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Annual herbs.

Stems: Stems ascending, 2–5(–7) dm long, usually branched.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate or lower ones opposite. Blades variable, usually elliptic to rhombic or obovate, sometimes narrowly oblanceolate, (0.6–)1.5–3.5(–5) cm long, 0.3–1(–1.8) cm wide. Surfaces glabrous to sparsely mealy pubescent, occasionally densely so. Margins coarsely toothed or sometimes subentire. Petioles 0–0.5(–1.5) cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary clusters; staminate flowers without subtending bracts; pistillate flowers each subtended by 2 accrescent bracts enclosing the fruit. Flowers unisexual (and the plants monoecious). Calyx of staminate flowers with 3–5 lobes. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens in staminate flowers 3–5, inserted on calyx at base; Stamens absent in pistillate flowers; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior (pistillate flowers), 2–3(–5)-carpellate, 1-celled; ovule 1, placentation basal; stigmas 2, filiform, dry.

Fruit: Utricle with membranous pericarp; enclosed by the persistent bracts; fruiting bracts somewhat compressed; connate ca. ⅔ their length; rhombic; 2–3.5 mm long; hardened from the stipe-like base up to the deltate apex and yellowish green; pale brown with age; apex with a large deltate tooth; usually also with a few smaller lateral teeth. Seeds 1 per fruit; brown; ca. 1–1.5 mm long.

Ploidy: 2n = 18

Habitat: Dry; disturbed areas.

Elevation Range: 0–1,920 m.
