Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Slender annual or perennial herbs.

Stems: Stems prostrate to weakly erect, 1–4 dm long, few–branched to many-branched, glabrous.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades narrowly oblong to linear 15–20 (–30) mm long, 2–5 mm wide. Apex acute, mucronate. Base cuneate. Blades callose. Margins with several glandular teeth of unequal length. Petioles ca. 1 mm long. Stipules ca. 2.5 mm long, connate; stipules usually bearing mucilage-producing colleters on inner surface that aid in protection of the growing shoot tip.

Flowers: Flowers 1–3(–5), axillary, peduncles ca. 8-10(-15) mm long. Flowers insect-pollinated, bisexual (perfect), isostylous or heterostylus. Calyx 4-toothed, the teeth ca. 1 mm long, narrowly to braodly triangular. Corolla lavender to white, thin, broadly tubular, 4-lobed, the lobes 1–2 mm long, throat often hairy; nectary disk usually present. Stamens as many as and alternate with the corolla lobes, inserted at the base of the corolla lobes as well into the tube, the anthers, dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits, dorsifixed. Ovary inferior, occasionally partly so, or very rarely superior, 2-celled; ovules numerous on a peltate placenta; style 1 or as many as carpels, terminal, short or long, included or exserted, glabrous or pubescent, filiform; the stigmas 2, subglobose or elongate, lobed or capitate, dry or occasionally wet.

Fruit: Fruit capsular; didymous; subglobse to oblong; somewhat laterally compressed; thinly cartilaginous; ca. 1.5 mm long; ca. 2–2.5 mm wide; usually with a loculicidally dihiscent beak. Seeds numerous per cell; angular; ca. 0.25 mm long; areolate; often becoming viscid when moistened; seed coat cells smooth to distinctly punctate; granular or tuberculate; with well-developed oily endosperm or endosperm occasionally scanty or absent.
