Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Branched or unbranched shrubs 2.5–4 m tall.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades oblong to oblanceolate, blades 17–38 cm long, 4–12 cm wide. Apex rounded. Base cuneate. Upper surfaces green, glabrous; lower surfaces pale green, glabrous or very sparsely pubescent along the midrib. Margins minutely callose–crenulate. Petioles 5–16 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences 12–20–flowered, the rachis condensed or obsolete, peduncles 25–80 mm long, pedicels 12–18 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect); hypanthium obovoid, 4–5 mm long, 3–4 mm wide. Calyx lobes dentiform, 0.5–1 mm long, pubescent on margins, apex acute to acuminate. Corolla white striped or tinged purplish, 20–30 mm long, 2–3 mm wide, glabrous, the tube suberect, the lobes spreading. Stamens 5, alternate with corolla lobes, connate; staminal column glabrous; anthers glabrous, the lower 2 with apical tufts of white hairs. Ovary inferior, 2-celled; ovule placentation axile; stigma 2-lobed, wet or dry, appressed and nonreceptive as the style grows through the anther tube, pushing out the pollen, after which the stigmas spread apart and become receptive.

Fruit: Berries purple; globose; 6–10 mm long. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Occurring in mesic valleys; northern Kaua'i.

Elevation Range: 150–220 m.
