Leaves: Leaves compound (odd-pinnate). Opposite. Surfaces covered with peltate glands especially on lower surface. Leaflet margins serrate to undulate or subentire. Petioles flat or grooved. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in panicles, appearing before or with the leaves. Flowers unisexual or bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx small, 4-lobed, sometimes of 4 distinct sepals or absent, valvate. Corolla of (2–)4(–6), rarely connate at base or absent. Stamens 2(3), inserted on corolla tube alternate with the lobes; anthers dithecal, oriented back–to–back, opening by longitudinal slits; Stamens abortive in pistillate flowers. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, 2-celled; ovule placentation axile; style 1, slender to broadened and compressed; stigmas 2, dry.

Fruit: Samaras with 1 terminal wing. Seeds 1 per fruit; narrowly ellipsoid to oblong; terete (cylindrical) or flat.
