Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 8–25 m tall, secretory canals present in most parts.

Stems:

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves compound. Alternate. Blades 25–90 cm long; leaflets 11–21, ovate to narrowly oblong, often folded upward along the midvein, 7–20 cm long, 3–89 cm wide (the lowest pair smaller). Leaflet apices rounded to acuminate. Base leaflet base rounded to truncate or cordate, often oblique. Lower leaflet surfaces densely scurfy stellate tomentose (throughout on young foliage). Margins entire. Petiolate; petiolules 5–12 mm long. Stipules absent or rudimentary.

Flowers: Flowers in racemose–umbellate inflorescences, primary axis stout, 5–10 cm long, the 3–5 secondary axes (rays) pendent, 15–30 cm long, ultimate branches 3–10 cm long, arranged umbellately at the tip and racemosely along the rays, arranged in terminal umbellules and a few laterally along the ultimate branches, most of the lateral ones early caducous, leaving an evident scar. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic; terminal (often appearing lateral). Pedicels 3–8 mm long, elongating up to 12 mm long in fruit. Calyx a short rim, teeth inconspicuous. Corolla of 6–8(9) petals; petals yellowish green, lanceolate, 5–7 mm long. Stamens 6–8(9). Ovary appearing (¼–)⅓–¾ inferior, 2–5-carpellate; stigmas 2–5, sessile on top of the conical disk.

Fruit: Drupes purplish at maturity; globose to ovoid or cylindrical (weakly 2–5–sided when dry); 10–15 mm long; the calyx forming an evident ring at or near the middle; the disk well–expanded; rounded to conical. Seeds 1 per pyrene; embryo small.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Occurring in mesic to wet forest.

Elevation Range: 650–1,600 m.
