Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Unbranched shrubs 1.8–2.4 m tall.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades elliptic, blades 18–24 cm long, 7–10 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Base cuneate. Surfaces glabrous. Margins callose–dentate. Petioles 8–12.5 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences 9–12–flowered, peduncles 25–40 mm long, pedicels 8–10 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect); hypanthium oblong to obconical, 6–7 mm long, 3–4 mm wide. Calyx lobes oblong, 3–5 mm long, 1–2 mm wide, apex rounded and apiculate. Corolla white, 30–35 mm long, 2–3 mm wide, glabrous, the tube suberect, the lobes spreading, ¾ as long to as long as the tube. Stamens 5, alternate with corolla lobes, connate; staminal column glabrous; anthers glabrous, the lower 2 with apical tufts of white hairs. Ovary inferior, 2-celled; ovule placentation axile; stigma 2-lobed, wet or dry, appressed and nonreceptive as the style grows through the anther tube, pushing out the pollen, after which the stigmas spread apart and become receptive.

Fruit: Berries unknown. Seeds: mature seeds not seen.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Known only from the type (Forbes 313.Mo; BISH; MO; NY; UC) and one other specimen (Forbes 240.Mo; BISH); collected in 1912 at Mapulehu and Pelekunu; respectively; eastern Moloka'i.
