Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Annual herbs.

Stems: Stems erect to procumbent, 0.5–5 dm long, usually branched, strigillose, sparsely villous, and usually glandular pubescent in inflorescence.

Roots: Taprooted.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Basal leaves oblanceolate; cauline leaves narrowly obovate to narrowly elliptic, basal leaves 5–13 cm long, 1–3 cm wide, cauline leaves 2–10 cm long, 0.4–3.5 cm wide. Margins of basal leaves lobed or dentate; cauline leaves lobed, dentate, or occasionally subentire. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers solitary in the leaf axils, usually only 1 opening each day per stem near sunset. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, 4-merous, in the leaf axils, opening near sunset or near sunrise. Sepals with distinct tips 1–3 mm long, valvate. Petals pale yellow or yellow, broadly obcordate, 0.5–1.3(–2) cm long. Stamens 8, in two series; anthers versatile, the sporogenous tissue in each locule undivided, dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Pollen ca. 50% fertile. Ovary inferior, as many cells and carpels as sepals; ovules anatropous; style 1; stigma deeply 4-lobed, the lobes linear, surrounded by anthers at anthesis.

Fruit: Capsules 2.5–5 cm long. Seeds in 2 rows per cell; ellipsoid to subglobose; 0.8–1.8 mm long; the surface pitted.

Ploidy: 2n = 14
